Join-as-you-go Granny Style

This is a wonderfully fast way to work up a blanket. It’s perfect for anyone needing a quick way to join their squares. It works for any granny square pattern, and you’re going to love it!

The join is worked in the last round of your squares. You simply drop the loop off your hook in between every cluster of stitches and pick it back up around the square you would like to join. There are a few pictures below to help you on your way, and if you need some YouTube help, here’s a video.

So, let’s get into it:

  1. Add your joining color in any space, and work the last row of your pattern until you have one square completed.
  2. Add your joining color in any space of your second motif, and work the last row of your pattern until you have one corner completed.
  3. Drop the loop off your hook and insert it into any space after the corner of your finished square (see picture below). Draw up your loop and slip stitch it into place.
  4. Make your next cluster in next space of your unfinished square. Drop your loop.

Continue steps 2 through 4 until you reach the end of your granny square. Do not join the corners (those will be joined catty corner).

Join additional squares the same way; joining the corners with the opposite corners (see picture below).

If you’d like to use this Starburst Granny Square pattern, you can find the pattern/tutorial here.

After finishing a cluster group, drop your loop off your hook and insert your hook through the square you would like to join, then pick up your loop and draw it through and slip stitch it into place. Then, continue on making your next cluster in the next space.

When doing a starburst granny square blanket, is it best to always do the same colour on the outer of the square to enable easier joining ? I was thinking of alternating the centre and outer colour, but when I see how to join, I think the colours are going to look odd when I join
